What's new with the Gen4 is just as important: It's still the rugged, reliable feed pistol it's always been. Field removal is similar to previous generations. Gen4 pistols fit Gen3 holsters. Furthermore, for law enforcement budget watchers, Dutton says Glock will keep law enforcement prices the same as they have been since 2000.
The most significant visual changes to the Glock Gen4 pistols, and those most likely to capture the interest of law enforcement and the general shooting public, are the interchangeable backstrap and magazine release.
Gen4 Glocks ship with two additional backstraps, each of which matches the "short frame" or standard grip. The standard backplane to "short frame" distance to the trigger is 70mm. The medium and large rear wheels increase the distance to 72mm and 74mm respectively. I tried all three. The short frame felt the best, the medium tolerable, and the large reminded me of the grip feel of the Glock 21 - simply too much. All of the grip options have that familiar Glock feel, but for me the option of the smaller short frame grip made the Glock much easier to hold.
In practice, if you had to choose the Glock 23 to avoid the long trigger reach of the Glock 22, the Gen4 pistols eliminate that problem.

Backstrap interchangeability on Glock Gen4 pistols does not affect any moving parts of the pistol, but the larger backstrap requires a longer trigger mechanism pin, which is included with all pistols, and a plastic punch tool to remove and set the trigger mechanism pin. Changing the backstrap requires a few steps, all outlined in the included instruction sheet: remove the trigger mechanism pin with the punch tool, replace the large backplate, and refit the trigger mechanism pin. When changing the rear belts, the larger ones were difficult to seat correctly and the punch tool was a little weak for the job, but once installed the belts stayed in place.
The Gen4 Glock proved to be a dream to shoot. Accuracy, reliability and improved features now take this pistol a step further to perfection.
Related to the interchangeable backs, the other notable visual difference was the "pointed pyramid" texture on the frame/grip, which replaces the more traditional Glock checkering. The so-called Gen4 RTF4 frame is not as aggressive as the RTF2 Military Grip, Dutton said. It's a different feel though - the pointed pyramids can be described as sharp - but they did improve my grip on the Glock while shooting.
While the availability of interchangeable backstraps gives individual shooters the ability to customize a Glock pistol to fit their hands, the release of new magazines on Gen4 pistols could be a significant change.

Glock Gen4 magazine releases are three times larger than previous generations. Combined with the short frame grip that I preferred, I found it much easier to engage the publication to the magazine when changing magazines. Although you can reverse the magazine release and install it from the other side of the grip (a 30-second operation, according to Glock), I left it in the traditional position. The new magazine publication works on a pivot rather than the direct results of the previous generation. Unsurprisingly, the Gen4 release has very positive engagement and little concern for accidental engagement.
Previous generation magazines will work in Gen4 pistols if the magazine release is on the left side; Gen4 magazines will work in previous generation Glocks.
The shorter frame and new magazine release provided a more satisfying shooting experience as they did not interfere with shooting.
Field removal, cleaning and safety instructions remain the same across Glock lines, Dutton said, and some Gen4 Glock parts will not be interchangeable with previous generation parts. These include the frame, slide, trigger bar, magazine catch, recoil spring assembly, back strap assemblies, trigger mechanism housing, and trigger mechanism housing pin. The Gen4 pistols feature a new, double-wound, two-stage, stainless steel recoil spring assembly that Dutton claims doubles the rated service life of the recoil spring compared to 2,500 for Gen4 G22 springs on previous Glocks - 5,000-plus rounds give. The previous generation Glocks were great to shoot and still are but the Glock Gen4 was a joy to shoot. The recoil combined with the shorter frame (which did not add a large backplate) grip made for faster and more accurate shooting. Every round was fired perfectly - reliably - and on target - accurately. Magazine changes were easier and therefore more efficient - simple. Is it "perfection"? No. However, according to Dutton, that term accurately describes what Glock is trying to do: make the most reliable pistol on the planet.
